Chapter 16 of the international building code (IBC) requires a site classification for seismic design of major structures such as hospitals, schools, multi-story buildings dams and hazardous waste containment structures. The preferred method of developing the site classification is from seismic shear velocity measurements performed onsite. Quality Geophysics’ experience with seismic methods permits this specialty service to be offered. Shear velocities can be measured using conventional refraction methods, surface wave dispersion, or micro-tremor measurements.
